Revving Up Safety: FIA Implements Innovative Measures to Protect Formula E Drivers from Hand Injuries

The FIA has made significant efforts to enhance driver safety in Formula E, particularly in response to a rise in hand injuries during the latest Gen3 era.

Drivers like Robin Frijns and Sam Bird suffered hand injuries due to steering wheel issues, leading to collaborative changes with Spark Racing Technology to address safety concerns.

In a recently released documentary, the FIA’s medical delegate highlighted the need for modifications after recognizing the unusual frequency of hand fractures among drivers.

Alterations such as reshaping the steering wheel, adding foam patches in the cockpit, redesigning the front wing, and introducing a new steering damper have been implemented to mitigate hand injuries.

Since the introduction of the steering damper in the 2024-25 season, hand injuries have significantly decreased, showcasing the effectiveness of the safety measures adopted by the FIA and Spark Racing Technology.
